I have collected and collated as many secondary source as I have been able to find, and would like to be able to post digital copies of wills, land records, etc. as might be available. Haven't found any in Ancestry.com. A search of the Family Search site indicates there may may relevant documents, but it looks like one would have to go to Salt lake City to get them. Would appreciate any help you may be willing to offer. randy.r.beebe@gmail.com. rrbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12005903174197638582noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1446893552661887965.post-19457757944333969802019-08-03T16:26:37.539-04:002019-08-03T16:26:37.539-04:00Thank you for the input, but that is not correct. ...Thank you for the input, but that is not correct. I know we like to think oral traditions are correct, but unfortunately they are greatly unreliable. Here are some important data points.

(1) John Tanner is not in the picture. If he was, he would be in the center with everyone else deferring to him. Instead, everyone is centered around the widow.

(2) The women were wearing styles from the late 1840s or early 1850s, so the picture was not taken in Nauvoo. It had to be taken afterward. See the comment above from an expert in historical clothing.

(3) They had to be near an operating daguerreotypist. Based on the literature about operating daguerreotypists in the West, they were never near one after 1844 in Nauvoo and before Marsena Cannon arrived in the Salt Lake Valley after John Tanner's death. (See other posts in this series as linked above.)

(4) The boy and man look like Elizabeth. They all have the same mouth and face shape. Those Beswick features are not found in the rest of the Tanner family except among her children.

(5) They had to have money to pay for the expensive daguerreotype. If you are not familiar with the history of the Tanner family, they were cash poor refugees beginning in the Missouri Era. They started to build some stability in Iowa, but then were refugees again and had little access to cash money until Myron worked in the California gold fields. (See, among other sources, George S. Tanner's family history and the San Bernardino tithing records at the Church History Library.)

(6) I spoke to Claudia Rayl in 2012 after she donated the picture to the Church History Library. She said there was no identification included with the picture. (Unfortunately I didn't record or transcribe our conversation but I included some brief notes here: http://theancestorfiles.blogspot.com/2012/03/tanner-family-daguerreotype.html.)

Please stop trying to argue that this is John Tanner. It is not.

Linda Davis makes a compelling argument on FamilySearch that the boy in the back is David Dan Tanner rather than Joseph Smith. I agree with her assessment although I wish we had a picture of a younger David Dan to compare.Amy Thttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04037263182287268748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1446893552661887965.post-44340344119636331552019-07-30T19:14:00.971-04:002019-07-30T19:14:00.971-04:00Daguerreotype pictures were taken between the year...Daguerreotype pictures were taken between the years of 1839 and 1860. We have been of the understanding that the picture was taken in Navoo in the early 1840's. John Tanner would have been in his early 60's. Myron Tanner would have been in his late teens. This picture was handed down through the Myron Tanner family and this is the information we were given. John Tanner, his wife, Elizabeth Beswick Tanner. Child, their son, Myron Tanner and his half sister, Louisa Maria Tanner Lyman. Yes a child will look similar to his father, and we still feel this is a Picture of John Tanner, his wife and two of his children.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06599276410395351398noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1446893552661887965.post-81396491805234003642019-05-31T17:20:42.297-04:002019-05-31T17:20:42.297-04:00I don't know!
