A Welcome and Affectionate Letter: Mary Pettit to Henry Green

As has been mentioned before, Henry and Mary called each other "Harry" and "May." This is a letter Mary wrote two days after Henry gave her a letter as she mentioned in her diary entry on December 31, 1890. The watch shown above was given by Henry to Mary on her birthday in 1890.

Salt Lake City
January 2nd, 1891

Dear Harry

It is with pleasure, which I cannot express on paper, or with words, that I attempt to respond to your welcome and affectionate letter. It causes me to reflect and call back many incidents that are sweet to be remembered. We have spent a great deal of time together and have found out each others dispositions to a great extent. In reviewing the past year I do so with pride and joy and satisfaction. We have not been so energetic and done as much good as we might have done, but in the future we must do better.

We have much to be thankful for, and are greatly indebted to God for the blessings which have been poured out upon us. He had dealt with us kindly, we have dealt with each other kindly, but have we always dealt with others kindly? I am afraid not, as we must learn to do. I can truly say I have not had an unkind feeling toward you, if I did speak unkindly. Another year has passed with out angry words, and I hope at the end of the many years we will pass together, we can say as truthfully as we do now. That we have not caused each other sorrow through our angry words or passions. The past year has been as a dream. But one that will not be forgotten by me. It has been one of the times in life which can in many years to come be looked back to, with fond remembrance. O if it could only be thus always as the years roll by. But as we cause it, so it will be. We have tried to make each other happy and in this we have succeeded. But have we tried to make our selves equally useful. If we love, honor, and respect others, we will certainly receive the same.

One great object we have in view, is to be worthy to meet our Maker, and to do this we must keep ourselves pure and unspotted from the sins of the world, and to live honest, true, upright and virtuous lives, and set examples that are worthy of imitation.

Let our love for each other lead us to this end. The love for each other lead us to this end. The love you have expressed towards me has been of a true and pure nature, and has proven to me twas from a true and noble heart, one which any woman who once posessed it, could only feel that with out it, life would be a burden. It has caused me to place all the confidence in you, whch is possible for woman to place in man. And that confidence has caused me to do and say many things which I could not otherwise have done.

I sincerely hope we will always feel as we do now in this respect.

That our affections will not be blighted in our early life.

Our love did not grow in an hour, a month, or a year. It began with attraction, lead to intrest expanded in to respect and deepened in to tenderness. It illuminates the darkest pathway and has blended to hearts together in inseperable unity. Such love I think is true love, and that we must cherish. We have all ready entered up on the new year, which may prove to be a very eventful one with us. May God helps us to fit and prepare our selves. And when we take up on ourselves the greatest and most important step in life we will be prepared for it. For I realize that it is a great responsibility. If we should enter up on an other year as we have this, may our expectations and anticipations be as bright before us as they are today. And that I will be worthy to bear the honored name of wife and prove my self to you to be all that is required.

I feel that I am rather leangthy in expressing my thoughts. Wishing that this may be a happy and prosperous New Year for you, and that you may live to enjoy many of them. May we continue in the good cause which we have commenced remember our prayers and not neglect our duties. Again Harry I wish you a Happy New Year and that God will ever be with you through life.

I remain
Fondly and Affectionately Yours
May Pettit

Henry and Mary married on December 9, 1891. They lived together happily until Mary died suddenly in April 1905 following the birth of their sixth child.

Mary Pettit Green's Watch

Mary Pettit kept a diary in 1890 which detailed her courtship with Henry Green. On her birthday, July 9, she noted the following:
9 July – Wednesday
This has been another hot day. I arose early went to work. The day passed slowly. I walked home with Harry. He came down later in the evening and found me ironing. H. gave me a present of the handsomest watch I ever seen. I felt that words could not express my thanks for the same. We sat on the porch untill late.
And here are some pictures of the beautiful watch which a descendant of Mary Pettit Green photographed the other day. Many thanks to her for taking the pictures and sending them so we can see why Mary was still feeling delighted the next day:
10 July – Thursday
This morning I feel so happy and lazy that I don’t feel like going to work but I went never the less....

1890 Diary of Mary Isabell Pettit, Part 12

It's been awhile since we've had an installment of Mary Pettit's diary. There will be four posts after this one and then an index to the diary. Thanks once again to my daughter for typing this diary.
16 October – Thursday
The morning is delightful. The sun shines clear and warm on the dew covered grass. The night was quite frosty. I have been sewing untill now. It is nearly twelve oclock.

17 October – Friday
The day passed but I don’t know how. It seems to me it is a waste of time to stay in the store when I have so much to do at home.

18 October – Saturday
Today I have again been placed to wait upon customers. I have found it to be an easy task there has been so few. Mrfs Snyder and I went to the resturant to supper. Harry was there. We left the store at nine and walked slowly home. There was a letter from Pa.

19 October – Sunday
I went to work at home this morning. And have hept it up all day untill evening Harry came and we went to meeting. Came home and sat up untill rather late. Had a little quite confidencial chat. Wm. Cowan was set apart as second Coun. To Bishop Seddon.

20 October – Monday
I have been out for about two hours today with Lilly trying to select a coat. The rest of the time I have been moping around the store doing a little of almost everything to pass the time. Business is very dull.

21 October – Tuesday
I enjoyed my walk to the store very much this morning. The sun shone so warm on the dew of the previous night. It was also a pleasant walk home. There was a letter from Alice for me.

22 October – Wednesday
The same old rot day in and day out. I am pleased when night comes. The days are warm and pleasant. I long to be free from the miserable old store and some of the people here. I came home and Harry came and spent the evening with me.

23 October – Thursday
The day has passed as usual with very little business being done. Although I feel tired. I have a letter from Pa and one from Uncle William.

24 October – Friday
I didn’t wake untill quite late. I arose had breakfast and went to work. The day passed very unsatisfactorly to me. Night came and I left at the usual hour. Came home and sewed on my dress untill late.

25 October – Saturday
I left home at twenty minutes to eight walked to work with Harry. After dusting and arranging my stock in order I was called to the cash desk and there remained most all day. I went to dinner with H. Went to supper with Mrfs Snyder and about nine had a few words with my boss. I decided to quit. I informed him of the fact and left hoping never to see him again. Met Harry and came home.

26 October – Sunday
I went to school and afternoon services in the Tabernacle. Bishop O. F. Whitney preached but I was so sleepy I didn’t hear much he said. I also went to evening meeting. Harry had a little business to attend to so he didn’t go.

27 October – Monday
We have commenced house cleaning and not being used to that kind of work it is rather hard on me. Although I heartily enjoy the change. I have recieved a letter from Uncle Alfred.

28 October – Tuesday
I arose early and after breakfast was over I took up carpets, scrubbed, scoued [sic] etc. untill about seven oclock. I then got ready and went to the political meeting in the meeting house which was quite interesting. After meeting it was so beautifull and moon light Harry and I took a walk.

29 October – Wednesday
This had been another day of hard work from the time I arose this morning untill dark. Harry came and put the parlor carpet down for me this evening. It is now twelve oclock and all are asleep. H. had gone home and I think I will go to bed now. I am very tired. We recieved a letter from Eddie. He is in Ogden.

30 October – Thursday
I am commencing to feel awfully tired. I don’t think I can stand many weeks like this one. The weather still remains clear and warm but the nights are quite cold. We have almost finished our heavy work.

31 October – Friday
This has been a lovely warm day. The car is now running to eighth south. Lilly and I went up town on it for the first time. Mrs. Gershback came up and stayed a short time disguised as a man. H came and spent the evening with us.

Mary's mother, Rebecca Hood Hill Pettit, with unknown child, perhaps Mary.

I have been rather low spirited for some reason I can’t account for. I feel wretched. I have not had much appetite for the last week. At present H is here cleaning out the well.

2 October – Thursday
I didn’t rise untill almost seven oclock. Breakfast was nearly ready. I ate breakfast and hurried off to the store. We had a quiet day. Mr. Fyler has arived. He looks well and seems very well satisfied with my labor while he was absent.

3 October – Friday
I left home a little late. Met Harry and upon ariving at the store found some big changes. Moving and refiguring. Left at seven.

4 October – Saturday
This has been a big day for us. At noon I went and bought Harry a pin for his birthday. I hope he will like it. I left work at nine oclock met Harry walked slowly home. Sat on the porch a while. On going in found a letter from Pa. Went to bed about half past eleven.

I stayed home all day. Ma and Emma went to conference and left baby with me. He cried most the time. We had supper. H. came back and we spent the evening in talking.

6 October – Monday
I found on ariving at the store that my desk had been moved and several changes made. But I must follow the desk and continue my old occupation. The day passed rapidly and night came before I hardly knew it.

7 October – Tuesday
This morning is quite cool but pleasant. I seems like a spring morning instead of the 7th of October. This is a day I shall always remember and look forward to and I hope with as much joy and pleasure as the present day and evening has passed.

8 October – Wednesday
The morning was unusualy cool but the day has been a pleasant one. I have been standing so much I feel very tired. H. came down and we spent another evening together.

12 October – Sunday
I have been to school the first time for several Sundays. Emma has had a few of her friends to spend the afternoon and evening. Harry came and we went to meeting.

13 October – Monday

14 October – Tuesday
Have been to the store and worked unusualy hard. Twas a busy day. I went to the dance in the school house and had a splendid time. Twas late when we came home. I feel a little tired but that is one of my failings.

15 October – Wednesday
Nothing unusual has happened. Business is very quiet. Harry came and that broke the monotony of the day and the evening passed as other do when he is here.

18 July – Friday
Have had a little rain today. Something out of the usual run has occurred today. Mrfs Walker wanted to go to the lake in the Eve and asked me stay for her. I refused which caused a few unpleasant words to pass between us and we have scarcely spoken all day. I stayed and let M. Barret go which still caused more feelings toward me.

19 July – Saturday
This was a hot sultry morning. After breakfast I went to the store. At noon I went to Dr. Dunford and had two teeth drawn which made my face ache the remainder of the day. I left the store about 9.30 feeling very tired and worn out.

20 July – Sunday
My face aches so bad I think I will not go out today. After breakfast and I had my bath and dinner over I lay down and slept. Harry came down. Had not felt well all day. I went to meeting with Emma. Bro. Gill and Bro. Mcmurren spoke.

24 July – Thursday
I arose about 6 oclock and felt good and very much like work. Which is almost as great a surprise as I have had lately. I worked around untill noon when I receved a note from H. stating he would be down and we took the 2:45 train for the beach. Did not return home untill almost midnight. Enjoyed it immensely.

25 July – Friday
I feel a little tired after my trip to the Lake. Have been very busy after I arived home. I wrote a letter to Uncle Alfred Pettit and then went to bed.

26 July – Saturday
Today has passed off as usual bringing forth no important items or events worth mentioning.

27 July – Sunday
This morning I arose and found ma had been very sick all night. I remained home all day and assisted with the work. At five minutes to one at noon another addition was made to the family [William Alfred Pettit, Rebecca Hood Hill Pettit's fourteenth and final child]. Ma is feeling pretty well. I did not retire untill very late. Harry has been here but a little while today.

28 July – Monday

I am almost sick myself today. The worry over exertion and excitement besides being up so much last night. I have felt very much like coming home. I had to lay down when I came home I was so worn out.

30 July – Wednesday
Today has been very hot. I wrote a letter to Alice. I went up to the Equitable today noon and had a long talk with Bro. Emery and Langton. Harry came over in the evening. I made him feel bad. My temper will be the cause of much trouble for myself if I don’t control it. I have resolved to try and do better.
